Horse Culatta

HORSE CULATTA

A revered leather in the avant garde fashion community. The culatta is cut from the hind section, a layer sitting just above shell cordovan. It is riddled with grain irregularity and best known for its strength, comfort and unique character. This leather is often used for footwear, particularly on the reverse (flesh) side showcasing residual traces of shell cordovan bleeding onto the fibers. This gives culatta a unique and chaotic look, making its appearance highly irregular around certain cuts. Varying from areas of shell cordovan, to suede and glazed/smooth sections.

The grain (top) side of the skin is also used for boots and wallets. Due to the high oil content it is highly prone to patina which tends to develop a lustrous, almost metallic shine. The culatta is very durable with a dense fiber, yet is also soft, gummy and stretchy in texture which makes it a comfortable leather for garments. The combination of these properties limits its usability down to certain wallets and designs.

Due to the small area of shell cordovan remnants on each hide, the reverse cut is only available for the bifold and Japanese wallet exterior.
